About Us

Our Story

Founder and owner Alice Lombardi started Bean Counter Bakery Cafe in 1998 out of a licensed kitchen in her home, selling her delectable desserts to local Worcester businesses. Her business grew quickly as her creations became renowned in the community. With the community’s support, her first cafe opened on Highland Street in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2001. Soon, she expanded her locations to her Shrewsbury Café where she had more space to focus on her award-winning wedding cakes. In May 2020 Bean Counter’s new Flagship Store at Grove Street, Worcester, MA opened its doors.

Over the last 20 years, the Bean Counter Family has grown from a one-person operation in Alice’s home to multiple locations staffed with our talented bakers, decorators and baristas. However, some things have remained unchanged. We have stayed true to Alice’s core values: desserts handmade from scratch every day with the finest ingredients – just as she did in her home kitchen. Our mission is to bring joy into people’s lives, whether it be a perfectly brewed cup of coffee or a beautiful wedding cake on the most special day of your life. We have also made it a part of our mission to give back to the community that has helped us arrive where we are today.

Today, Bean Counter Bakery Café specializes in delicious and beautifully decorated wedding cakes, celebration cakes and cupcakes, cookies, fine desserts and premier coffee. We source the finest local and international ingredients from Worcester to Madagascar to Belgium. Our menu also includes gluten-free and vegan cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other treats for everyone in your family to enjoy.
